Quick takes: Purdue women's basketball takes down UT Arlington
Destini Lombard records her first double double as a Boilermaker.
Takeaways from Sunday’s 73-55 win:
INSIDE PRESENCE
No surprise Lana McCarthy, Kendall Puryear and Reagan Bass dominated the paint. The Mavericks don’t feature a lot of size, and the Boilermakers took full advantage. Puryear hit four field goals in the second quarter, and McCarthy made five in the third quarter. Bass provided consistent production throughout the game. However, McCarthy and Puryear dealt with foul trouble. But when one went to the bench, the other stepped up. The Boilermakers also controlled the rebounding, winning by double digits. They scored 16 of their 18 points in the third quarter in the paint.

DOUBLE TROUBLE
Where was Destini Lombard on your bingo card for double-doubles? By midway through the third quarter, the transfer from Stephen F. Austin totaled 13 points and 13 rebounds. Lombard pulled down eight rebounds in the first quarter, and she became a one-player transition game. Lombard got the offense going by pushing the pace. She’s been a pleasant surprise during the early part of the season, and Lombard will continue to play big minutes. Bass also contributed a double-double for the second straight game with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

WELCOME BACK
Shereka Wright, the program’s only three-time All-American, brought UT Arlington to Mackey Arena. Wright and Katie Gearlds were teammates about 20 years ago. A video tribute was played before the game recognizing Wright and her accomplishments with the Boilermakers, and she received a nice ovation from the crowd. Wright’s team demonstrated the same characteristics she did as a player - toughness, always on the attack, and refusing to give up. The Boilermakers were on the verge of extending the lead beyond 15, but the Mavericks didn’t back down.
This felt like the first 40-minute game from the Boilers in a while. Hope they can keep that up as conference play approaches.
