Roof leak at Xfinity Center postpones Purdue-Maryland women's basketball
The schools will discuss rescheduling options over the next 48 hours
Saturday’s game at Maryland was postponed due to a leak in the roof at the Xfinity Center in College Park.
Heavy rains are pelting the East Coast and the leak started about 15 minutes before tipoff. After a couple of 10-minute delays and considering other playing options, the game was postponed.
Maryland athletic director Damon Evans told BTN that the schools will discuss rescheduling options within the next 48 hours. However, if no agreement is reached, the Big Ten Conference will step in and reschedule the game.
The Boilermakers play Wednesday against Iowa at Mackey Arena but don’t play until Jan. 18 at Penn State. The Terrapins travel to Michigan State for a Tuesday matchup and are off until Jan. 17 against Ohio State.
Sunday Jan. 14 could be a rescheduling option, depending on the availability of the arena.
Maryland officials considered shifting the game to the Xfinity Center Pavillion.
“We wanted to play the game, but we also wanted to make sure Purdue felt comfortable with playing the game,” Evans told BTN. “Their coach (Katie Gearlds) took a look at the playing arena - (Xfinity Center Pavilion) - but didn’t feel comfortable and that’s their choice and we’ll move forward.”
The school also sent engineers to the Xfinity Center roof to try and divert the water.
“We wanted to see if we could divert the water off the roof in a different direction and see if it would stop leaking,” Evans told BTN. “We weren’t able to accomplish that.”
