WNIT: Jayla Smith, Mila Reynolds spark Purdue women's basketball past Butler
The Boilermakers will host Duquesne at 7 p.m. in the third round Thursday at Mackey Arena
How the Boilermakers beat Butler 62-51 on Monday night after an 18-day break:
NICE RESPONSE
The offense was clicking, thanks to Jayla Smith and Mila Reynolds, helping Purdue build a 14-point lead with 8:55 to play. The Bulldogs, though, climbed back into the game, cutting the deficit to 55-51 but the Boilermakers answered with two baskets by Abbey Ellis and a crucial jumper from Reynolds. Purdue closed it out from that point.
BIG CONTRIBUTIONS
Down two starters—Caitlyn Harper and Madison Layden—the Boilermakers needed some help off the bench. Enter Smith and Reynolds. Smith totaled 11 points and five rebounds and delivered clutch plays. Reynolds put on a shooting clinic from 3-point range, going 4 of 6, and helped Purdue close the first half on a 12-2 run to take a 31-28 lead. The Boilermakers held Butler to 4 of 22 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs were shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc this season.
MILESTONE NIGHT
Jeanae Terry reached a major milestone, recording her 1,000th rebound. She’s the first player in Big Ten history – men’s and women’s – to total 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 700 assists. She finished with four points, five assists and 12 rebounds.
